Pembroke East Central By-Election

Since the unfortunate death of Minister Nelson bascome, this seat has been vacant however on Aug 27th the voters will have their choice as to his replacement. Who will this be?
This seat has been a PLP stronghold since party politics. In the last 2 elections, Nelson bascome won the vote of 93% and 87% of the electorate. Amazing statistics.

Minister Bascome was from that community, of that community, and gave back to that community. His shoes are mighty big, and whoever tries to fill them will need to come with the similar goods.

Welcome to Progressive Minds

To all of you who first heard about this website from The Royal Gazette, welcome! We're glad you're here. Please, have a look around, register an account and speak your mind!

www.progressiveminds.bm is a website owned and operated by the PLP. Though this site was originally created for what was then the recognised “youth wing” of the PLP, since 2008 this has not been the purpose of this site.

UBP's Motion Likely Unconstitutional

There is no provision under the Bermuda Constitution to file a motion of no confidence against the Premier. Our Constiution requires that the UBP file a motion of no confidence in the PLP Government.

Your Democratic & Human Rights

I have wrote on this also on my blog Catch-A-Fire.

I am of the understanding that there are currently some rumours going around insinuating that various businesses have told their staff to attend the demonstration tomorrow, with the implication that failure to do so would have some repercussions for those staff. A further implication is to discredit the demonstrations, both as being artificially inflated and as using intimidation to do this.

At this stage, as far as I am aware, there is no evidence to back up these allegations.

Vexed, Outed?

How did the hateful pro-UBP blogger Vexed Bermoothes get an advance copy of a Profiles of Bermuda poll before it was released to the public?

Thoughts of a Protest

PLP MP for Constituency 15, Walter Roban, JP, MP contributed the following piece:

Today (Tuesday June 16, 2009) I attended an event that was less like a mature political demonstration but more like a mob on their way to attend a WWF showdown. Like rabid dogs anxious for their pound of flesh, they were roaring loudly organized like a pack unsatisfied unless blood would be drawn.

Breaking News: PLP's Political Opponents Still Oppose the PLP

Yesterday's hateful demonstration was instructive. It's now crystal clear who is 'outraged' over the Premier's humanitarian decision to help four innocent people. With but a few exceptions, it's the same people that have been attacking Premier Brown for years.

The Premier's angry and unhinged long standing opponents could care less about the Uighurs. They are using the Uighurs to try to weaken the PLP and take down a strong and effective leader that's delivered FutureCare, DayCare, free Bermuda College and assistance for first time home buyers.

March on Parliment

It is truly unfortunate that there was a march on parliament today asking Premier Brown to go. If it was anyone else who made the decision people won’t question it but because it was Dr. Brown they can’t accept it.

The people in this country with the financial power will do everything they can too make Bermudians feel the Government is unstable. WAKE UP PEOPLE THEY WANT THE POWER BACK. Hence that being said we have some back benchers that seem to play into the hands of the people who want Dr. Brown out how pitiful.

On The No-Confidence Vote

Readers of this forum may have noticed that I put up a poll on this issue, and put forward an argument in the comment section in favour of the no confidence motion. My main points were that Dr. Brown's actions were unconstitutional, and that his actions had compromised our nation, while at the same time an argument could be made that his actions amounted to treason in conspiring with the US.

Fighting anti-Uighur prejudice

As a result of the decision to bring the Uighur Gitmo detainees to Bermuda last week there has been a huge public backlash towards this decision. The vast majority of this backlash has been focused on the decision itself and how it was handled by the Premier.

Hypocrisy In Action!!

Hypocrisy, is the act of preaching a certain belief, religion,or way of life, but not practicing it.(webster).for the so called advocates of human rights, and the belief in democracy, I say that the US,UK,and many people in this country, You have failed the test.(my opinion) Since the premier, and minister of public safety announced this decision, I have heard nothing but vile hatred, not only for the refugees, but for DR. Brown in particular. The so-called friendly christain people of bermuda, (not all) needs to refresh themselvesi, in bible scripture,MATTHEW 7:

Gitmo Prisoners Sent to Bermuda? WTF?

I understand that Bermuda, or rather Dr. Brown, has agreed to allowing four Uighur detainees from the US concentration camp of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to settle in Bermuda.

There are a number of questions that this raises, for one, whether such a decision is even legal, as with our current constitutional arrangement such foreign policy decisions are the remit of the UK Government and not Bermuda.

Bermuda used by the US

As I'm sure you've all seen in various news sites, the Bermudian government has agreed to allow the resettlement of 4 Guantanamo Bay prisoners from China. Link here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31237416/

Does Kim Swan Want Out?

I find it very interesting that Kim Swan applied for a job that he knew would require him to quit his post as Opposition Leader and as an MP.

http://www.royalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?a...

Does Kim want out? Given the nature of the UBP, it wouldn't surprise me if he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Gwyneth Rawlins, Max Burgess, Wayne Furbert and Jamahl Simmons.

Crusie Ships & Gambling

I've created a new poll concerning the proposed bill to allow cruise ships to operate their casinos while in port. I feel that this issue is one that we definitely need to debate, and so I'll try to get the ball rolling.

I have voted against allowing the cruise ships to operate their casinos to operate while in port.

UBP Miscomprehension???

While the title may be a bit of an exaggeration, Senator Michael Fahy has clearly demonstrated either a lack of reading skills, or lack of comprehension skills in his criticisms of the Auxiliary Bicycle Bill that is to be brought before the House today.

The bill clearly states that to be able to ride an auxiliary cycle, a person will have to complete Project Ride, and that from the age of 16-18 they will not be able to tow another passenger. In addition, they will not be able to ride on the roads between 1am and 5am.

Real Solutions or New Age Fantasies?

Today's Bermuda Sun editorial page is a lesson in contrasts. On the one hand you have Larry Burchall proposing common sense crime fighting solutions. While I object to his "underclass" frame, the underlying point is spot on when he writes, "The only real and possible action here is defensive. More police action, more jail cells, and longer sentences so that the people in this underclass are put away and then kept in human warehouses - prisons. That process buys serial peace.

A Change in Drug Laws?

As part of an editorial in today's RG, the editor raised the taboo subject of decriminalisation. I never thought I'd find an ideological ally in Bill Zuill, however this is a issue that has merit and deserves debate. Do you feel that Bermuda's drug laws should be re-examined? Do you believe such reform will help or hurt the situation in Bermuda?

The community has to look at the causes of crime and gang violence much more closely, and the fact that drugs and the profits to be made from drugs are largely responsible for this cycle of violence.

More Gang Related Shootings

This is ridiculous. When is government house going to get the message that the police have to get serious about going after criminals. The Government has pleaded with Government House to get tough, and to this day its doubtful that we've seen any change.

Cruise Bill Stalled Again!

We all saw the tourism numbers this week. It's clear that, now more than ever, Government needs to take action to bolster the tourism industry.
