As I'm sure you've all seen in various news sites, the Bermudian government has agreed to allow the resettlement of 4 Guantanamo Bay prisoners from China. Link here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31237416/
Does anyone have any idea why on Earth we're doing this? Whether or not they're wonderful, freedom loving peacful citizens has nothing to do with it. When did we become a place for the US to extradite people to? And the comment from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder: “By helping accomplish the President's objective of closing Guantanamo, the transfer of these detainees will make America safer." - Doesn't this infer that it makes Bermuda less safe?
The only logic I can come up with is that this is the price we pay for some greater victory, ie, a barganing chip in US political negotiations. Because these 4 and their situation has absolutely nothing to do with Bermuda.
What grates me more, however, is that the PLP have made it virtually impossible for expats who come to Bermuda, work for 6 years giving all their energies to the island to stay, but then they'll extend 4 free passes to Guantanom Bay prisoners. Can anyone shed some light on this?
