Actually Rocksolid, your rephrasing would make it biased. It would be better to phrase as 'Should innocent Gitmo prisoners be sent to Bermuda or the USA'. Step up mate.
Your question assumes that the US was an option. Obama tried to bring them to the US. Bermudians from both political parties celebrated Obama's election. Now, we in Bermuda, have an opportunity to really help Obama's presidency succeed. I hope all of those people who voiced their support for Obama are willing to now do something to help his administration succeed.
The detainees are a US problem and they should take them in. At least they put the issue to vote in Congress - which they needn't have as under international law they are obliged to look after them. The Congress vote is a cop out. But at least they had a chance to vote on the issue. When did the House of Assembly vote on this?
Are you saying because many of us supported an Obama presidency that we should support everything he does? Are we expected to blindly support Obama's presidency? You need to come up with something much more concrete than that to get my support on this matter.
I DO NOT SUPPORT THE ACTIONS OF THE PLP GOVERNMENT ON THIS MATTER!!!!!!
Well, I guess I am not a real supporter. Support to me includes offering constructive criticism and if the PLP does not accept my positions that is on them, not me.
I have said it before and I will say it again, my love and allegiance to my country of birth far outweighs any loyalty to or support of any political party or politician.
I will tell you one thing though, I have never been afraid of confrontation and if Rocksolid or any other member of the PLP wishes to take me on, the only thing I will say is beware because I do not back down very easily.
The PLP needs to stop making such unpopular decision for the appeasement of a few and start to do what is best for all of Bermuda and make decisions accordingly. Otherwise, the PLP can be guaranteed to lose substantial support, which will result in many who said they would never vote UBP doing so just to send a very clear message.
First of all nice to see you posting again. Secondly, pay rocksolid no mind..
I do have a question for you. Obviously, this decison have been detrimental to the government from a local prospective (public outrage). Do you think there can be a positive outcome for Bermuda from a global perspective?
Firstly, my name is Guilden, not Mr. Gilbert, I reserve that title for my father.
Well, to the Obama Administration it could be viewed as a positive outcome because of the pressure this removed from Obama. From the U.K.'s perspective it is not a positive outcome because now the U.K. Governemnt is forced to explain how the Bermuda Government can make such a decision without proper consultation with the U.K. as is required under our constitution. The Bermuda Governemnt, whether it is happy about the current staus or not, has no authority to enter into foreign policy negotiations or agreements with the consent of the U.K. Government.
China surely will not look favourable at Bermuda after thisand please do not be fooled as China is making some very large and substantial investments on this side of the world. From tourism perspective China is growing on a daily basis for example.
In the borader world, I do not think it will make any difference positive or negative except where there are countries who support, the U.S., U.K. or China.
At the end of the day, as I have said, I just want to see a Bermuda Government that makes decisions that are in the long-term best interest of Bermuda and its population. This is my view is not a sound decision.
To this one, I believe they should be sent to the US.
To rocksolid's question, I believe that, yes, we should take them (if it's all on the up and up, which we don't know yet.)

Biased Question
A fair poll question would be "Should Bermuda take in innocent Uighur refugees?"
au contraire

False Assumptions

Wait one minute
Rocksolid,
Are you saying because many of us supported an Obama presidency that we should support everything he does? Are we expected to blindly support Obama's presidency? You need to come up with something much more concrete than that to get my support on this matter.
I DO NOT SUPPORT THE ACTIONS OF THE PLP GOVERNMENT ON THIS MATTER!!!!!!
Have I made myself clear?
Then you're not a real supporter
Don't you know Guilden, unwavering support is the only choice these days?
Welcome to the combined opposition.
Rocksolid's view of democracy is that once you've cast your vote you give away your right to criticise, or even have a contrary opinion.
LOL!!!!

I trust I have answered your question.
Actually...
those are two different questions.
To this one, I believe they should be sent to the US.
To rocksolid's question, I believe that, yes, we should take them (if it's all on the up and up, which we don't know yet.)
