Crime in Bermuda: Does it Affect You Directly?

With all the stories of Crime we read in the newspapers and see in the news, do you really feel unsafe? The reason why I say this is because is because I live in North Hamilton (back-of-town) and I see a lot of drug addicts, but I do not feel threatened by anyone. I have walked on these streets at all times in the night and I don’t feel as if my life is in danger. I may see the occasional "thug" (or should I say wanna-be thug) and that results in either a nod or he goes about his own business.

Is it possible that many (not all) victims of vicious assaults were the result of their previous involvement criminal activity? We have heard of machete attacks, and people being beaten with baseball bats, recently it appears to be random people being attacked. But is it really random? I recall an acquaintance telling me how a drug-addict was beaten by several men for stealing drugs from a drug dealer.

Now I am not saying that these people deserve it, but does crime affect law-abiding hardworking people as much as it is portrayed in the media?

Crime can touch us all

I think because you are familiar with North Hamilton you are a bit more acclimatised to your surroundings, and people around you may not think of you as a threat, a meddler, a stranger to distrust. Someone else, let's say a tourist couple who heard about Hubie's Bar, after hours they're possibly going to feel less comfortable because it's unfamiliar surroundings.

I'd tend to agree that many victims of assaults of that nature could have been involved in something previous, and hence we get situations where the victim doesn't co-operate with police to apprehend the perpetrators. But how about the people who get mugged on the streets or their houses broken into? Those kinds of crimes are real and do indeed affect innocent persons.

My home was once broken into and I've never so much as spat on the street, so crime can affect us all.

I agree, Yes crime can affect us all.

The high incidence of crime on this island in recent years has affected many of us in the community, both directly and indirectly. How is this possible? It has created a state of mind which is blinded by fear, leading to hatred and the eventual dissolution of a community with a legacy built on hardwork, sacrifice and struggle. The scars of a once divided society, have re-opened and the lines have once again become clearly defined. We live in a society in which jobs pay good, yes; however, the cost of living and its burden on many bermuda homes and our lack-there-of community involvement, coupled with western media exploits has led many astray. I do understand the cut is often much deeper, as this is only skimming the surface.
